An airstrike in Damascus on Tuesday evening claimed the lives of 13 people, with Syrian officials pointing the finger at Israel. While Israel hasn’t officially claimed responsibility for every attack, it has acknowledged conducting hundreds of strikes on Syrian targets.
Here’s a closer look at the ongoing conflict between Syria and Israel:
Why hasn’t this made bigger headlines?
With Israel deeply involved in its war efforts in Gaza, Lebanon, the West Bank, and Yemen, the strikes on Syria have been somewhat overshadowed. Though Syria is allied with Iran as part of the “axis of resistance,” the regime of Bashar al-Assad has remained notably silent since the war on Gaza erupted last October.
How frequently has Israel bombed Syria in the past year?
According to the Armed Conflict Location and Event Data (ACLED), Israel has launched over 220 attacks on Syria since last October. These assaults, carried out through airstrikes and artillery, have targeted weapons depots, vehicles, and bases of Iran-backed groups.
At least 104 attacks, which have resulted in 296 deaths, have occurred this year alone, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR). One of the most significant strikes took place in April when Israeli jets hit the Iranian consular building in Damascus, killing seven members of Iran’s elite Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), including two high-ranking Quds Force generals.
The conflict between Israel and Syria remains part of the larger regional tension involving Iran and its allies, though it continues to attract less attention compared to other war zones in the Middle East.
