Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who is due to meet US President Donald Trump on Tuesday in Washington DC, has reportedly skipped talks for a deadline to extend the Gaza ceasefire with the Hamas militant group.
The ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas came into force on January 19 and is due to expire on March 1.
According to the terms of the ceasefire deal, talks on the next phase to extend the ceasefire were due to begin on February 3 but there’s been a silence from Netanyahu’s office about when a negotiating team might engage with Hamas.
However, Hamas has also not commented publicly about the Monday’s deadline of ceasefire talks extension and considerable uncertainty about the next stage of the truce remains.
The Israeli government is yet to reveal the team which will be negotiating with the Hamas group that had signalled earlier that it will be sending its delegation to Qatar or Egypt for negotiations.
Qatar’s Prime Minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al-Thani, who has acted as an intermediary in the talks, said in a press conference on Sunday that there was no clarity as to when or how the talks would start. “We hope to see some movement in the coming days,” he added.
US President Trump has claimed the credit for the six-week ceasefire signed between Israel and Hamas to pause the hostilities which began in October 2023 after Hamas launched an attack on Israel, killing over 1,200 people and taking about 250 people hostage. In retaliatory measures, Israel had reportedly killed over 47,000 Palestinians.
